Kate Bosworth steps into the heels of Lois Lane, one of America's most famous newsreporters, in Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," opening in theaters today everywhere. The "Blue Crush" and "Beyond the Sea" star teams up with newcomer Brandon Routh in the latest chapter in the Superman saga. Bosworth talks below about playing an iconic character. Q: Is there a reason why Lois Lane can't be blonde? KATE: I wanted her to be a brunette just because that's history. You don't want to rewrite history that way. Just keep that the way it is. Q: At a certain point, do you have to surrender yourself to the idea and thought that you're a part of a phenoemnon that's much bigger than just a movie? KATE: Well, I felt like I had a unique experience on this one namely because of Bryan Singer. I went in a met with him and he enforced me how important the characters were and how the important the emotion was in this film, rather than just making it a tremendous spectacle and an amazing event. The visual effects were stunning. We all know they're going to look great but I think Bryan's focus was the relationship of the characters and the development they have. Obviously, I think that many, many films look flash and exciting and cool but I think what Bryan's done for this film, which is really exciting, is make it seem important and relatable that you care for them. Q: Where did you meet Brandon at first and what were your impressions of him? KATE: The first time I met Brandon, we were in the screen test going to audition. I was given two scenes. One, as him as Clark Kent and one with him being Superman. I just think he's done a tremendous job. He plays it spot on and it's a really hard thing to do. I say to people, "You don't know how tough it is to play this role" because there's so much subtley involved. If you played it obvious, it would be ridiculous and I think he just played it with such a quiet strength as Superman and a sweet, clumsy Clark Kent. I just saw a lot more emotion in him that we hadn't before. Q: Did you know you were going to work with Kevin Spacey again after "Beyond the Sea"? KATE: I hoped so because Kevin and I – I just adore him and we get along so well. We just have such a special relationship. I didn't know it was going to be so quickly but it's been an absolute joy. When you enjoy your experience with other people, there's the thought you'll work with them again. I didn't even realize he was in talks to play Lex Luthor in "Superman." I don't know if Bryan approached him [then]. I certainly wasn't aware of it. Q: How was being brought up on a harness and wires for the flying scenes with Superman? KATE: It's fun the first time they hoist you up but the second time is where it becomes the reality of how uncomfortable it is. It was incredible. I felt very lucky because I got to fly with Superman. There's so few people who are able to say that. Q: You get knocked around a lot in the airplane rescue sequence... KATE: That was probably the hardest sequence on me, more so than the ship sequence at the end. The airplane sequence was really full on. We took first unit on that sequence then they moved it all to second unit. So I would work, get thrown around on second unit, then I would have to work on first unit in the afternoon on a scene so that was a lot of work for me actually. Q: Are you afraid of flying to begin with? KATE: Flying is one of my biggest fears, so this was like playing my nightmare. This was not an easy sequence for me. It probably added to [my fear] as well. I do not like to fly. It's not something I enjoy doing but unfortunately I have to do it a lot. Q: If you could fly, would you do so on a regular basis and where would you want to go? KATE: That's a really funny question. Um, I'd use it all the time. I'd probably go into outer space. I'd go where Superman goes and just see the Earth from that point of view. Q: Do you ever dream about flying? KATE: That's my favorite dream. They happen very rarely and they're like little nuggets of gold. I love it. So much fun. "Superman Returns" opens in theaters June 28th.
